"Train depot of the future" for Jernhusen, 2010
- near zero-energy industrial architecture
The environmental focus of the real estate and construction industries, has so far been housing and office buildings. With their proposal in the invited competition "Train depot of the future" arranged by the Swedish real estate concern Jernhusen, YAJ Architects aim at expanding that environmental focus to include also industrial buildings. In collaboration with Incoord Energy Consultants, they developed a near zero-energy concept consisting of solid concrete structures, waterborne floor and wall heating via solar panels in combination with geothermal heating, pre-climatized fresh air supply, and sensor-driven natural ventilation through motorized skylights.

The invited competition "Train depot of the future" for Jernhusen
The purpose of the invited competition was to create concepts for climate friendly and brand-building environments for maintenance depots with architectural qualities high enough to restore the status that the railway sector once had. Other than a competitive means, the requested top level architecture is a strategy of Jernhusen to gain acceptance as early as possible in the planning and building permit processes of their developments - an urgent issue due to the facts that our cities gradually expand towards the industrial areas including those of the railway, and that Jernhusen plan significant investments in train depot developments over the next decade.
The invited architects, besides YAJ, were SandellSandberg, MalmströmEdström and ThorbjörnssonEdgren.
Architecture
-The buildings of our proposal are formally hybrids between rolling, green hills and aerodynamic high-speed trains, describes Jonas Nyberg, YAJ Architects. -The envelopes of the buildings in dark terrazzo-concrete are wrapped by what we call "green tracks" in a graphic pattern inspired by the parallel and diverging rails of a railway yard. The "green tracks" serve as racks for both solar panels (on the roofs), and for evergreen climbers (on the façades). The "green tracks" consist of bundles of metal lamellas mounted at a distance from the building envelopes. Circular, domed windows/skylights ventilate and let daylight into the interior rooms. At night, these constellations of circular openings resemble a starry sky. The gables of the buildings are glazed - as per tradition in the grand buildings of the railways.
-Due to their overall shape and the vegetation of their façades the buildings remind you of a landscape - vast, undulating and overgrown - rather than of buildings. Nature has an entirely positive connotation in our culture, and by means of an abstract landscape we intend to alleviate the scale collision, as well as the program collision, that inevitably occur when adding a large-scale industrial facility to a small-scale housing context, continues Ylva Lindstedt, YAJ architects. -The colors of the buildings are quiet: The concrete elements of the envelopes are dark-pigmented with a touch of aubergine. Their surfaces are polished for maximum color depth and luster. Other colors of the depot facility are nature's own: The steel and ivy of the "green-tracks", the glass of the PV-panels and the glazed gables of the buildings, and the raised, bright titanoxid-pigmented concrete walkways of the railway yard.
Energy Systems
It's near zero-energy buildings, or minimum-energy buildings, which YAJ Architects and Incoord have developed: The solid concrete structure of the buildings serve as thermal mass, that buffers heat and cold. Both heat and cold peaks can thereby be evened out, providing a stable and comfortable indoor climate over the days and the seasons. This means cutting the otherwise hefty energy peaks every time a train set is transported into and out of the depot buildings.
-Heating and cooling is done water-borne by means of roof-mounted solar panels with geo-energy stores to embedded pipes in the concrete floors and walls. The buildings are naturally ventilated via sensor controlled, motorized skylights. Supply air is led through channels in the station platforms, where the air is pre-climatized: In summer the supply air is cooled, in winter warmed, by the surrounding ground, explains Tore Strandgård, Incoord.
Brand Building Architecture
-By means of their formal references to trains, railways and historic railway architecture, the depot buildings communicate Jernhusen and the context in which Jernhusen operates. The environmental aspects of the proposal underline and further reinforce the already high environmental profile of Jernhusen. The "green tracks" are architectural features which, due to their vegetation and solar panels, also have an eco-symbolic function, that we tie tightly to Jernhusen by means of their railway-like graphic pattern, Ylva Lindstedt and Jonas Nyberg conclude. -With these green qualities, along with an intense and characterful architecture, we wish to support Jernhusen in its ambition to make a difference for people and for the environment.
